Finally Sanjay Leela Bhansali came up with a movie that I liked since after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Bajirao Mastani is nothing short of a Magnum Opus.
A beautifully shot movie with extravagant sets and lovely costumes.
The glorious life of one of the most Powerful Peshwa has been perfectly captured on the screen here.
My respect for Ranveer Singh has gone up tremendously after watching this movie. Ranveer has done such a fantastic job as Bajirao that its hard to imagine someone else doing this role.
He has managed to even capture the typical Marathi accent in his dialogues and his proud demeanor is totally worthy of a Peshwa. Now attention to details like these are what make a fine actor.
Ranveer should do more such roles than overacting in every movie and screaming at the top of his lungs.
Deepika Padukone as Mastani is perfect. She is as fabulous as the sweet, tasty Mastani that you get in Pune.
But, Priyanka Chopra as Kashi has totally stolen the show. She has played the part of a disgruntled wife of a Politically influenced family to the T. From no angle did she not look the Wife of a Chitapavan Brahmin.
Its movies like these that tell you why Priyanka and Deepika are at the top of the chart amongst all other Actresses.
But the best one I liked was Tanvi Azmi as Bajirao’s Mother. OMG !!! What a performance !! You cant help but love to hate her !! Brilliant.
The Song sequences are amazing, though the War sequences looked a bit awkward. They could have probably done them a bit better. It looked as if Bhansali wanted to get the Wars out of the way quickly and focus his time on the Romance between Bajirao and Mastani.
The movie was slightly long for my liking though. I would have preferred the movie to be shorter by almost 20 minutes and wish the Ending was done in a different manner. It was way too clumsy according to me.
Yes there are some “Kuch bhi” type of scenes, like Bajirao jumping on the Elephant or going Solo rushing into the Mughal army, but hey…. thats Bollywood for you
I know people have been complaining about, “Bajirao could have never said Vaat Lavli” or “The Wife of Peshwa would never have danced with Mastani showing her midriff”.
To all these people there is one thing I would like to say.
Bajirao wouldnt have spoken in Hindi with his wife. Nor would have Shahu Maharaj or any one else in the Maratha Empire conducted their Court business in any other language than Marathi.
But the entire movie is in Hindi. If you can understand, you will probably understand the difference between a Documentary and a Commercial Bollywood movie.
I would definitely recommend this movie for a Big Screen viewing to all those who like to watch movies for what they are …. Entertainment.
For those who want to learn about History of Bajirao, read the books written about him. If someone asks you about the History of Mahatma Gandhi and if you point out references from Ben Kinsley’s Gandhi …. its not the movie maker who is dumb, its you.
